Level 1 Computing

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge:

11COM will reflect or promote kaitiakitanga, aiding in the guardianship of our natural environment. Digital technologies can help us to gather information about our environment, improve processes to sustain it, and connect with people to increase our knowledge around this issue. 11COM students well create a digital outcome which promotes kaitiakitanga.  This will involve a wide range of digital technologies e.g. programming and electronics.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Focuses on key skills in Programming. Term 1 students work on developing a working knowledge of Python.

Term 2
Focuses on key skills in Database and Digital Media using Web Design. Term 2 students work on developing a working knowledge of SQL, PHP, HTML and CSS.

Term 3
Term 3 is spent finalising the final project, testing, and evaluating it to ensure it is fit for purpose.

Term 4
Week 1 is the external exam for Computing. These are completed at school and are sent away for marking to NZQA. Results are awarded in late January.
Two external assessments are offered in 2023: Human Computer Interaction and the Computer Science topic of Code Compression.

Recommended Prior Learning

No prerequisites – completing 10COM would be an advantage.
