Subject Description

Year 13 Sport Science 


This course of study follows on from the Sport Science courses offered at Level 2, using and examining in greater depth the skills acquired previously. There is a strong emphasis on students critically examining topics. Sport Science is an academic subject and students will need good literacy skills and an ability to critically evaluate.  


Students will cover areas from examining the effects of applying leadership principals to physical activity contexts, in-depth learning about functional anatomy, physiology and biomechanics, to designing and implementing exercise programmes. 

Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to: 

  • Develop and apply strategies to improve their own performance in their sport. 

  • Understand and review training programmes that increase performance. 

  • Improve their understanding of their own sport and how it affects their well-being. y


Understand basic body functions, including physiology, biomechanics and anatomy and how they influence performance in physical activity 

 

Subject Overview

Term 1
Term 1
Students will be investigating physical activity trends through their lifetime. They will look at what effect the physical activities they participated in have had on their Hauora. They will critically examine how participation in future physical activities will affect their Hauora. Students will choose and run a physical activity for the whole school (house activity). They will look at leadership styles and critically examine which are most effective in leading the specific activity.

Term 2
Term 2
Students will study Biophysical Principles such as: functional anatomy, biomechanics, skill learning principles and sport psychology through the context of a chosen skill. Students will then critically analyse a physical skill performed by self or others.

Term 3
Term 3
Students will be involved in training for and competing in the Tough Guy Challenge or a personal physical activity of choice. Students will critically examine performance improvement programmes in relation to the following biophysical principles; goal setting, methods & principles of training and exercise physiology. In this standard, students will be required to demonstrate specific levels of competence in either Badminton or Turbo Touch.

Term 4
Students will use this time to finalise any outstanding work.
