Teacher in Charge: Ms F. Johns.
Visual Art and Photography is the visual communication of ideas and concepts. Students develop visual literacy and aesthetic awareness as they engage in practical work and the study of other artists’ work. They learn to make objects and images, to source and develop ideas, and to interpret and communicate meaning in their own and others' artworks.
Students are able to experiment with materials, use processes and conventions to pursue their ideas and create artworks. The art disciplines studied will consist of drawing, painting, printmaking and photography. Their art making is further informed by investigations into the contexts in which artworks are made, viewed, and valued.
The theme for the year draws on the students’ own cultural milieu and local environment and the study of New Zealand and international artists as a source of motivation and subject matter. There is an emphasis on the study of New Zealand art, and an understanding of Māori visual art is achieved through an exploration of Māori contexts. There will be field trips to gather visual information that can later be used as a reference for subject matter and developed further into drawings, paintings, prints and photographs.
Course Endorsement is possible.
Each project will be assessed at the curriculum level.
