It is recommended that students wishing to study Sports Science at Level 2 have studied Sports Science at Level 1


Year 12 Sport Science


Sport Science at John Paul II is a broad subject area that includes topics and assessments from measures of performance, learning about functional anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics, to designing exercise programmes and running in house school activities.  


Sport Science is an academic subject and students will need good literacy skills and an ability to critically evaluate. Sport science will have a ratio of two theory and two practical lessons. 


Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to: 

  • Participate in a variety of physical activities and sports 

  • Develop leadership and interpersonal skills 

  • Understand basic body functions, including physiology, biomechanics and anatomy and how they influence performance in physical activity 


Examine skill-learning principles and psychological skills in relation to improving at a physical activity 

  • Plan, apply and review leadership strategies in a group or team physical activity 

 



Subject Overview

Term 1
Term 1
Students are required to examine the role and significances of physical activity for young people in New Zealand and physical education within John Paul II High School. Students will plan, implement and evaluate a physical activity for the whole school and reflect as a group on things that you would change if you were to do this again.

Term 2
Term 2
Students will study Biophysical Principles such as: functional anatomy, biomechanics, skill learning principles and sport psychology through the context of a chosen skill. Students will demonstrate understanding of how and why biophysical principles relate to the learning of physical skills.

Term 3
Term 3
In this standard students will experience a range of different methods and principles of training and develop an understanding of how these need to be applied appropriately to training and physical activity. They will also be required to apply this knowledge by creating and facilitating training sessions for their peers and critically evaluate the effectiveness of these trainings. In this standard, students will be required to demonstrate specific levels of competence in either Badminton or Turbo Touch.
