___________ Mathematics ___________ Pāngarau

In years 9 and 10, the Mathematics programme utilises the Achievement Objectives set at Levels 3 to 5 of The New Zealand Curriculum, building and  utilising the key competencies:

  • Thinking,
  • Using language,
  • Symbols and texts,
  • Managing self,
  • Relating to others,
  • Participating and contributing.

End of topic testing is done in Years 9 and 10 to identify what curriculum levels students are at and then used to develop programmes that enhance the learning of each class.

The course develops the five strands of Mathematics:

  • Number,
  • Measurement,
  • Algebra,
  • Geometry,
  • Statistics and
  • Probability skills.

Students will be encouraged to develop their numeracy skills by being introduced to and engaging with a range of mathematical problems. Students will have opportunities to develop their thinking skills; understanding of language, symbols and texts; self-management; the ability to relate to others and participate and contribute within their communities.

A range of courses are available at senior level catering to differing interests and ability levels. Mathematics is compulsory at Year 11, as 10 Numeracy Credits are required to reach Level 1 NCEA.

We offer both external and internal topics.

Most students will also do Mathematics in Year 12, as it is a requirement for most tertiary courses, and its concepts and skills are fundamental to many science courses.

We offer two classes at Level 2, General Mathematics and Mathematics with Statistics; both courses offer a range of external and internal topics.

In Year 13 we offer two Mathematics courses - Mathematics with Statistics and Mathematics with Calculus. Both require prerequisites from the Year 11 and 12 Mathematics courses.
