Level 1 Japanese

11JAP
Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Mrs J. McMillan.

Recommended Prior Learning

It is expected that student will have studied Japanese at Year 10 level. However, students can be accepted into Year 11 Japanese if they have not studied Japanese before, provided they demonstrate the required motivation.

This course requires that the students be able recognize and write hiragana, katakana and simple kanji. Assessments will focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening, and are both internally and externally assessed.

At Level 1, students are required to use language to talk about themselves and their immediate situation.

Subject Overview

Term 1
The students work on their presentation, which is a one minute speech on an aspect of their life.

This could include their family, hobbies and school life. They may also wish to talk about their town or what they would like to do on a trip to Japan.

Term 2
The students continue to work on their writing portfolio.
By the end of the year they need a minimum of two pieces of writing with at least 600 characters, using hiragana, katakana and some of the 50 Kanji studied for Level 1.
These pieces are based around the students themselves and their immediate situation.

Term 3
The students continue to work on their speaking through the Interact assessment. They must speak with one or two other students for a minute unscripted about a subject of their choice in conjunction with teacher input.
There are three separate interactions recorded throughout the year.

Term 4
The students spend this time preparing for the external exams which are listening and reading, and finishing up any work from earlier in the year.
