Level 1 Sports Science

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr T. McNish.

This course provides an extension to the existing Year 9 and 10 Physical Education programme, developing leadership and organisational skills. There will be opportunities for students to take an in-depth look into different sports. They will examine the importance of health and fitness and their effects and benefits to the modern lifestyle and apply theoretical aspects of Sports Science to practical situations.  

Sport Science is an academic subject compared to Level 1 Physical Education. 


Students will gain knowledge, skills and experience to: 

  • Develop interpersonal skills (including leadership) when working within a team to encourage positive outcomes. 

  • Understand how and why, self-management skills impact on participation in a team/group setting. How to work as a team and develop the necessary skills to make competition successful. 

  • Understand what affects their participation and how participating in physical activity affects their well-being/Hauora. 

  • Understand basic body functions and the influence biophysical principles (including anatomy, biomechanics and physiology) have on the performance of physical skills. 

Develop an understanding of factors that affect their physical performance and how they can improve their ability.  

  • Develop strategies and the physical performance skills necessary to compete in a practical setting. 


Subject Overview

Term 1
Term 1
Students will be participate actively in a variety of physical activities and explain factors that influence own participation. They will critically examine how participation in future physical activities will affect their Hauora. Students will demonstrate self-management strategies and describe the effects on participation in a variety of physical activity contexts.

Term 2
Term 2
In this standard students will be required to apply biophysical principles (e.g. functional anatomy, biomechanics and exercise physiology) to the execution of a chosen skill. This will be achieved through a series of in class written assessments. Students will demonstrate understanding of the function of the body as it relates to the performance of physical activity.

Term 3
Term 3
Students will demonstrate quality movement in a physical activity. Students will take the opportunity to find out what your strengths are in the activity and which skills you need to improve. In this standard, students will be required to demonstrate specific levels of competence in either Badminton, Turbo Touch or sport of personal choice.

Term 4
Term 4
Students will use this time to finalise any outstanding work.

Achievement Standard.

Recommended Prior Learning

A good pass in Year 10 Physical Education is required to study at Level 1.
