Level 1 Art
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Ms F. Johns.
Visual Art is the visual communication of ideas and concepts. Students develop visual literacy and aesthetic awareness as they engage in practical work and the study of other artists’ work. They learn to make objects and images, to source and develop ideas, and to interpret and communicate meaning in their own and others' artworks.
Students are able to experiment with materials, use processes and conventions to pursue their ideas and create artworks. The artwork will consist primarily of drawing, painting and printmaking. We may also look briefly at sculpture and photography. Their art making is further informed by investigations into the contexts in which artworks are made, viewed, and valued.
The Theme for the year draws on the students’ own cultural milieu and local environment and the study of New Zealand and international artists as a source of motivation and subject matter. There is an emphasis on the study of New Zealand art, and an understanding of Māori visual art is achieved through an exploration of Māori contexts.
Course Endorsement is possible.
