Level 3 Chemistry
Subject Description

Level 3 Chemistry is a course which builds on Level 2 Chemistry.
In Chemistry, students will:
- Investigate and measure the chemical and physical properties of a range of groups of substances, for example, acids and bases, oxidants and reductants, and selected organic and inorganic compounds
- Relate properties of matter to structure and bonding
- Develop an understanding of and use the fundamental concepts of chemistry (for example, equilibrium and thermochemical principles) to interpret observations
- Apply knowledge of chemistry to explain aspects of the natural world and how chemistry is used in society to meet needs, resolve issues, and develop new technologies
This is a course that aims to extend the understanding of fundamental chemical concepts and is designed to provide an opportunity to discuss the impact of Chemistry on everyday life.
The course provides a body of knowledge suitable for students who will not continue Chemistry as well as for those who intend to study the subject at tertiary level.

AS91391 - Demonstrate understanding of the properties of organic compounds - Externally assessed worth 5 credits - written exam
Term 4
Revision and preparation for examination.

Pathway
Students who study Chemistry will have an understanding of how matter transforms in chemical reactions and use techniques to measure the energy and mass changes during these reactions, and evaluate the properties of different substances. The knowledge and skills they will demonstrate in this subject is an important step towards understanding the world around them, and will ensure they are capable and adept employees.
Assessment Information
Assessment is a combination of internal assessments and an external examination. Internal assessment occurs periodically throughout the year and the external examination is held in Term 4.Credit Information
