Level 2 Biology
Subject Description
Teacher in Charge: Dr L. Steenhauer.
In Biology students will carry out practical work and study concepts related to the way of life of living organisms.
In this course students will:
Explore diverse ways in which animals and plants carry out their life processes.
Examine ecological distribution patterns and explain possible causes for these patterns.
Evaluate biological information presented to the public to determine its validity.
Learn how genes are expressed to produce every living organism.
Explain how natural selection by survival in an organism's way of life leads to genetic changes within populations.
Subject Overview
Term 1
91155 - Internal - Demonstrate understanding of adaptations of plants or animals to their way of life
91156 - External - Demonstrate understanding of life processes at the cellular level.
Term 2
91159 - External - Demonstrate understanding of gene expression.
91158 - Internal - Investigate a pattern in an ecological community, with supervision.
Term 3
91157 - External - Demonstrate understanding of genetic variation and change
91154 - Internal - Analyze the biological validity of information presented to the public.
Term 4
Revision for external examination.
Recommended Prior Learning
Level 1 Science
Pathway
Students who study Biology will have an understanding of how organisms interact with their environment, particularly in NZ ecosystems, and will also learn about human body systems. This will ensure they have skills to evaluate biological information they encounter in their careers, enhancing their value as an employee.
