Year 10 Science

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Dr L. Steenhauer.

Students studying Science in Year 10 will build on investigating and researching skills introduced in Y9. They will explore key concepts of physics, chemistry, biology and earth science. Students will use scientific terminology to explain trends and patterns, test hypotheses and present their findings from investigations.

Students studying Science will develop their observational skills, inferring, problems solving, measuring and communication. They will continue to strengthen their scientific literacy and numeracy to succeed in NCEA.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Students study Biology - life processes e.g. digestion, respiration

Term 2
Students can perform an investigation and submit it as a project to the school Science Fair. Students study Physics, learning about electricity, magnetism and thermal energy transfers.

Term 3
Students study Chemistry, learning the structure of the atom, the patterns and relationships found in the periodic table.

Term 4
Students study Earth Science and gain Level 1 Science credits by exploring a New Zealand surface feature - the Mawhera gorge near the school. They will walk from school to make observations and explain the geological forces that have helped shape and create the gorge. Students will revise for their end of year exams and take part in the West Coast Junior Science Competition.
