Year 9 Science

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Dr L. Steenhauer.

Students will learn from the work of other scientists and learn how to carry out their own reliable and valid investigations into the world around them. 

They will be able to interpret Scientific information, to ultimately be able to make informed decisions regarding all aspects of their lives in the future. The skills and knowledge learned in Science in Y9 are also important for developing the skills to succeed in NCEA. 

Subject Overview

Term 1
Chemistry - Introduction to the science laboratory: safety and equipment. Students will work towards earning their Bunsen License. They will then study elements, compounds and mixtures, acids and bases and chromatography.

Term 2
Science fair - Students will perform investigations and develop their own science fair project to enter in the school science fair at the end of the term. Students will also start Biology.

Term 3
Biology - Students finish Biology and will begin Physics: energy and forces.

Term 4
Students will finish Physics and prepare for their exams, carry out some dissection work (optional) and take part in the West Coast Junior Science Competition.
