Level 2 Religious Studies

Subject Description

Teacher in Charge: Dr J. Roberson.

At Level 2 students will be provided with a deeper understanding of: 

  • Scripture looking specifically at the Gospel of Luke
  • The response of the Catholic Church to contemporary social issues
  • Key beliefs in two different faith traditions: Islam and Catholicism

Year 12 also will also have a reflection day focusing on their personal spirituality and faith journey.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Scripture - The Gospel of Luke

During this topic students will deepen their understanding of:
* The Good News
* Sources/audiences/purposes of the gospels
* Motifs, imagery, metaphor, interpretation of scripture in general and the Gospel of Luke in particular
* Structure of the gospel and key themes
* Social justice as presented in the Gospel of Luke
* Wider implications of the gospel for today including: personal, social, political, geographical, religious implications

Term 2
Ethical issues and social action

During this topic students will deepen their understanding of:
* Social issues today
* Catholic Social Teaching
* The history of Catholic Social teaching including a basis in scripture (including the gospel of Luke)
* Papal encyclicals regarding Catholic Social Principles
* Catholic organisations which take action based on Catholic Social Teaching
* Outcomes for groups/issues supported by Catholic organisations
* Wider implications of Catholic Social Teaching

Term 3
Key Beliefs - Islam and Catholicism

During this topic students will deepen their understanding of:
* The Key beliefs of Islam and Catholicism related to the question of life after death
* Sacred texts and tradition as a foundation for belief in these two religious traditions
* The similarities in the beliefs of these two religions in relation to life after death
* The differences in the beliefs of these two religions in relation to life after death
* The significance/meaning of these beliefs
* Wider implications of these beliefs

Term 4
Students will complete any outstanding coursework in Term 4 and they will also be given the opportunity to experience a range of prayer styles, liturgy and ritual.

Recommended Prior Learning

No prior learning is necessary as this is a compulsory subject at all levels.

Stationery

Students will need all stationery required of Year 12 students, including a device for classroom use. They will also need 2B8 hard cover exercise book.

Pathway

Vocations to the priesthood or religious life or careers in social work, law, politics, human resources, the media or any other career pathways that require critical thinking sills, ethics, research or the synthesis or construction of arguments related to particular issues or topics.

Assessment Information

Assessment is through internal assessment, and will consist of assessment in each of the first three terms. Each assessment is worth 6 credits so a total of 18 credits are available to students in this course.

There is no external examination.

You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.

This subject is approved for University Entrance.
